Musculoskeletal Therapy

You might not be familiar with what a musculoskeletal therapist does or how they’re different to other therapists. This page will help you understand this relatively new form of therapy.

Musculoskeletal Therapists are not masseuses although it may appear this way. MSTs are bachelor degree qualified professionals, helping prevent injury and reduce pain by addressing postural and movement dysfunctions.

An MST is hands on like a remedial massage therapist but is able to address specified pains and injury due to their rehabilitation knowledge of a physio. A musculoskeletal treatment might be any combination of the following:

  • Deep tissue

  • Myofascial release

  • Trigger pointing

  • Muscle energy techniques

  • Joint mobilization

  • Cupping

  • Dry needling

  • Posture and/or gait assessment

  • Strengthening exercises

  • Stretches

MSTs are experts in improving your movement and function which go beyond the typical talents of a remedial masseuse. A large part of a MST’s program is directed at preventing injury, loss of movement, and even surgery as well as educating the clients on preventative strategies in their daily lives.

Ideal Therapy specialists consult and educate our clients on how to prevent the overuse of muscles that can develop into strain injuries.
